Cuomo’s Electric Vehicle Initiative Will Help Reduce Oil Dependence, EC’s Diamond Says

WASHINGTON – Robbie Diamond, President and CEO of the Electrification Coalition, said today that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles is the type of action needed to help reduce U.S. dependence on oil.

“The greatest benefit of Governor Cuomo’s initiative is that it will put cars on the road powered by fuels whose availability and price are largely insulated from foreign manipulation,” Diamond said.  “Our national and economic security depends on ending the transportation sector’s near total reliance on oil.  Transitioning to alternative fuel vehicles is the only way to accomplish that.”

Diamond also supported the initiative’s approach.  “By combining state fleet integration with an educational campaign, regulatory reform, and infrastructure development, the Governor’s plan will get EVs on the road immediately while laying the foundation for widespread deployment in the not-too-distant future.  This is the type of multi-faceted and integrated effort that is needed to get results in reducing oil dependence.”

Governor Cuomo outlined his “Charge NY” plan in his State of the State address.

The EC has published two detailed plans, the Electrification Roadmap and the Fleet Electrification Roadmap, designed to facilitate a transformation of the U.S. transportation sector from one dependent on petroleum to one largely powered by alternatives like electricity.  The plans recommend commercial and government vehicle fleet integration, regulatory reform, consumer acceptance, and charging infrastructure as among the most critical elements of achieving electrification of the transportation sector.
