WASHINGTON—On Wednesday, the Biden-Harris administration announced $1.5 billion in federal funding to support the transition to electric freight vehicles and a national goal of a zero-emissions freight sector. These investments include a $1 billion funding opportunity for the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Program for cities, states, and Tribes to replace heavy-duty vehicles with zero-emission models, $150 million in the first round of awards as part of the Reduction of Truck Emissions at Port Facilities Grant Program, and $72 million to establish the “SuperTruck: Charged” program.
Electrification Coalition Vice President of Policy Anne Blair is attending today’s White House Roundtable on Zero-Emission Freight Infrastructure and released the following statement:
“Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles account for approximately 6% of vehicles on the road, but 26% of the transportation sector’s petroleum consumption. Because global oil markets are controlled by bad actors that do not share our American democratic values and are highly volatile, transitioning to freight vehicles powered by domestic and diversely sourced electricity will boost national and economic security.
“The Electrification Coalition applauds the Biden-Harris administration for these significant investments in electrifying our nation’s freight sector. These actions, along with the leadership of our industry partners and state and local actions, will reduce oil consumption, improve public health, particularly in underserved communities, and create thousands of good American jobs.
“We are excited to see diesel big rigs replaced by clean, quiet electric trucks on America’s highways. The future of freight is electric!”
The Electrification Coalition (EC) has been leading the charge in freight electrification, creating the Electric Freight Consortium, a forum for collaboration among private-sector partners, including shippers, carriers, retailers, and EV supply chain companies. The EC also recently launched the Port Electrification Network to convene port authorities, vehicle and equipment manufacturers, shippers and carriers, logistics providers, utilities, and real estate providers.
