WASHINGTON—On Wednesday, four members of Congress announced legislation that would put the United States in reverse by undoing the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent emissions standards for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles.
Electrification Coalition Executive Director Ben Prochazka issued the following statement:
“Oil’s monopoly on American transportation is a major national and economic security vulnerability. We must shift our transportation sector away from oil to keep Americans safe and secure.
“The world is shifting to electric transportation, and the U.S. must pursue policies that will break our oil dependence. Expanding electrification powered by domestic energy produced through diverse sources will protect consumers and businesses from the economic roller coaster of oil prices, improve public health and national security, and protect U.S. global automotive leadership. We must sprint to catch up, or the U.S. auto industry will be left behind in the global transition to EVs.
“To be clear, the EPA’s emissions standards only further diversify the market and available technologies beyond just internal combustion. The thoughtful approach to the rules is critical for advancing transportation electrification and giving Americans the freedom to switch to an EV if and when they choose to.
“The future of transportation is electric. Congress must reject this Congressional Review Act resolution to protect American security and American jobs.”
